Managing Complex Holidays Act Remediation at Scale for Millennium Hotels

June 22, 2026

Millennium Hotels and Resorts New Zealand (MHR NZ) operate 17 hotels nationwide, supported by a central team and employing just under 1,200 people. Like many organisations in the hospitality sector, 24/7 operations, and shift-based work patterns adds complexity to payroll operations.

Like many businesses across New Zealand, MHR NZ identified a remediation project to recalculate holiday pay and repay any underpayments was required. While remediation payments for current employees could be managed through the existing payroll system, paying former employees presented a greater challenge. Many had outdated contact details, banking information, or tax details, and managing records at this scale would require additional resource.

MHR NZ initially explored managing the remediation internally, but this approach would have consumed significant internal resource and taken focus away from other business priorities.

The Solution

MHR NZ engaged NLC Payroll +MORE to support the remediation project after receiving a recommendation through their professional network.

The engagement focused on managing payments to former employees using NLC’s secure former employee portal. The portal enabled former employees to securely:

  • Access a dedicated online portal
  • Verify and update personal, banking, and tax information
  • Upload supporting documentation where required

Using an established solution removed the need for MHR NZ to build and manage their own system, an option that would have required significant investment, additional internal resources and, and robust data security processes.

The Experience

NLC Payroll +MORE was engaged partway through the project and provided technical payroll expertise and practical guidance, allowing the project to continue with confidence. Onboarding was straightforward, supported by templates, examples, and proven processes.

The NLC team also handled day to day queries from former employees directly, significantly reducing the internal workload for the MHR NZ team. Once the portal was established, administration time reduced to only a couple of hours per month.

The Outcome

By outsourcing former employee remediation to NLC Payroll +MORE, MHR NZ was able to:

  • Progress a large-scale, multi year remediation project efficiently
  • Reduce internal administrative burden
  • Ensure sensitive employee data was handled securely
  • Provide clear communication to former employees
  • Avoid further delays to remediation payments

The project is now concluding, with the former employee portal being closed and remaining unclaimed funds transferred to IRD unclaimed monies.

Why NLC Payroll +MORE

  • The ability to explain complex payroll requirements clearly
  • A supportive and personable team that made a challenging project easier to manage
